August 12 eclipse set to stress-test European solar ramp management

The partial solar eclipse crossing Europe on 12 August 2026 will impose two steep ramp events on grid operators: a generation drop as the moon's shadow advances and a recovery ramp as it clears. Per Solcast's weekly update for pv magazine (published 7 August), both European and US grids face the stress simultaneously, limiting the scope for cross-regional balancing support.

Ramp magnitude scales with installed PV capacity in each affected zone. Bidding zones with high solar penetration and clear-sky forecasts on the day carry the greatest intraday imbalance risk. TSOs relying on aFRR and mFRR will need pre-activated reserves positioned ahead of the shadow's ingress to avoid frequency deviation during the steepest descent.
