Austria to redirect solar subsidies toward storage from 2027

Austria announced a sweeping overhaul of its solar subsidy framework, with changes taking effect from 2027. Support will move away from standard rooftop and ground-mount PV toward battery storage, energy management systems, and specialised solar applications, per pv magazine.

The headline target is up to 8 GW of market-oriented storage capacity by 2030. The government framed the pivot as an "energy storage offensive", signalling that storage deployment, not additional generation capacity alone, is now the priority for public funding.

Industry associations welcomed the direction but flagged execution risk. Groups are calling for rapid implementation timelines and unambiguous funding rules, warning that delays or vague criteria could slow investment decisions ahead of the 2027 transition.
