BESS as power backup and grid asset for AI data centers

S&P Global's Henrique Ribeiro argues AI workload variability is making BESS essential inside data centers and across the wider grid.

AI is reshaping data center load profiles. Unlike traditional compute, AI inference and training workloads shift power draw rapidly and unpredictably. S&P Global analyst Henrique Ribeiro, writing in pv magazine, argues that conventional power infrastructure was not built for this variability, and that BESS is now filling the gap both at the facility level and at the grid connection point.

The dual-role framing matters for market participants. A data center BESS that manages internal power quality can simultaneously provide frequency response or balancing services to the grid, effectively monetising capacity that would otherwise sit idle. Ribeiro's analysis does not attach specific MW figures to European deployments, but the structural case applies directly to markets such as GB, Ireland, and the Nordics, where data center buildout is accelerating alongside BESS procurement.

For BESS developers and offtake negotiators, the data center segment represents a route to long-term contracted revenue outside traditional capacity market or ancillary service stacks. How regulators treat behind-the-meter BESS that also participates in grid markets remains an open question in most European jurisdictions.
