It scores eight distinct use cases across three outcome buckets: winning (2), competitive (4), and losing (2). The report does not name the rival technologies in the summary reviewed here, but the framing implies a direct comparison with alternatives such as diesel generation, fuel cells, and flywheel UPS systems.

The findings arrive as hyperscaler and colocation demand continues to pull grid capacity across multiple European zones. Aurora Energy Research published its own note on the same theme on 10 Sep 2026, per pv magazine, suggesting both independent researchers and commercial analysts are converging on storage economics as a critical variable for data-center power planning.

For European asset managers, the Volta scorecard matters most in zones where BESS is already co-located with large loads: GB, IE, and DE are the clearest examples. Where BESS loses out, operators face a technology-selection decision that could affect both capex and grid-service revenue stacks.
