Borkum 1, an offshore wind farm located off the German coast, has secured prequalification for the German balancing market, according to Renews.biz. The milestone means the array can now bid capacity into ancillary services alongside conventional dispatchable assets.
Prequalification is a formal TSO-administered process confirming that a unit meets the technical response requirements for balancing products. Offshore wind assets face a higher bar than thermal plant because their output is variable, making control system integration and ramp compliance more demanding.
The development fits a broader pattern across European zones as system operators work to deepen the pool of balancing-eligible resources ahead of rising renewable penetration. Aurora Energy Research published a concurrent report titled "Balancing a Decarbonising Power System", though detailed figures from that publication were not available at time of writing.
