BW ESS breaks ground on 5.7 GWh Klostermansfeld battery in Germany
The project is one of Europe's largest BESS sites and anchors a push toward 20x growth in deployed storage capacity.

BW ESS has broken ground at the 5.7 GWh Klostermansfeld battery energy storage system in Germany, per pv magazine. The project marks a significant step up in scale for the developer and represents one of the larger single-site BESS commitments announced in the German zone to date.
The company's executive director, Roberto Jimenez, told pv magazine that BW ESS is targeting a 20-fold increase in deployed storage capacity as it expands beyond its existing UK portfolio. Germany is the anchor market, but additional European zones are in scope.
The move comes as the BESS pipeline across Europe has tightened around a handful of high-volume developers. BW ESS's prior utility-scale experience in the UK, where balancing and ancillary services revenues have driven project economics, underpins its German market entry.
