Coalburn 1, a 500 MW battery in Scotland developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, entered commercial operations on 12 August 2026, making it Europe's largest operational BESS asset. The project is the first of three UK transmission-connected sites CIP has in its pipeline.
The milestone lands on top of an already fast-expanding GB fleet. Modo Energy put GB installed BESS capacity at 7.2 GW at the end of Q1 2026. Coalburn alone adds roughly 7% to that figure, illustrating how single large-scale projects are now moving the aggregate needle.
The broader storage supply chain is feeling the pull. Reuters reported that SMA Solar's order backlog leapt on energy storage demand, sending its shares higher. Per pv magazine, Europe's utility-scale storage market is increasingly segmented by zone and policy regime, with manufacturers competing on downstream partnerships and grid-scale project execution through 2027–2028.
