Elia and Amprion commit to second German-Belgian interconnector

Elia and Amprion have signed a commitment to close collaboration on a second high-voltage interconnector between Belgium and Germany, per Elia's announcement. The two TSOs did not disclose a target capacity or commissioning year in the published statement.

The Belgian and German bidding zones share a single existing interconnector. Congestion on that link has repeatedly limited the transfer of power between the zones, affecting both day-ahead prices and balancing costs on both sides of the border.

A second link would sit alongside the ongoing expansion of the broader north-west European grid, where projects such as NEMO (Belgium-UK) and ALEGrO (Belgium-Germany) have already shifted cross-zonal flows. Elia and Amprion said further technical and regulatory steps will follow the collaboration agreement.
