Elia clears permitting hurdle for Ghent port grid reinforcement
Belgian TSO secures environmental permits for strategic transmission upgrades in the Port of Ghent, unlocking construction.

Elia confirmed on 14 July that it has obtained environmental permits for strategic grid reinforcement projects in the Port of Ghent. The permits clear one of the most common bottlenecks in Belgian transmission development (environmental authorisation) and allow the projects to advance toward construction. No in-service date was disclosed in the available release.
The Port of Ghent is among Belgium's densest industrial load centres, hosting chemical, steel, and logistics operations. Grid reinforcement there supports both security of supply for existing demand and headroom for electrification load growth. Elia has not yet published project-level capacity figures in the available materials.
In Great Britain, NESO has opened an independent investigation into its operational decisions during the June heatwave, according to Renews.biz. The probe examines unspecified operational allegations; no findings have been published. The two developments together reflect active stress on European transmission infrastructure from both long-run industrial demand and acute weather-driven operating conditions.
