The EU has finalised a tripartite agreement setting a 45 GW energy storage target, binding 22 member states to new deployment obligations. The deal is explicitly framed as a gas-reduction measure, linking storage scale-up directly to the bloc's energy security agenda.
Under the agreement, renewable and storage developers have committed to a credible deployment pipeline. Multinational investors are preparing to increase capital allocation to the segment, and further EU manufacturing support is expected to follow. The commercial and industrial storage segment is also flagged for significant expansion.
The policy marks the first time the EU has placed quantified storage obligations on member states rather than leaving deployment to market forces alone. Implementation timelines and per-country allocations have not yet been published, per pv magazine.
