EU planning scenarios published 18 June project European electricity demand rising roughly 20% toward 2050 as electrification of transport, heating, and industrial processes accelerates. Battery storage and hydrogen are named as the two central flexibility technologies needed to balance a higher-renewables grid at that scale.
The demand outlook sharpens the stakes for grid investment and capacity adequacy across all bidding zones. A 20% demand uplift on today's consumption base implies several hundred TWh of additional annual generation requirement Europe-wide, a figure that sets the backdrop for ongoing debates over interconnection, DSO reform, and capacity market design.
Separately, Germany in October 2025 announced a €6 billion industrial decarbonisation programme that includes carbon capture and storage, per Reuters. The programme signals Berlin's intent to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors beyond direct electrification, complementing the EU-level demand scenarios.
