Europe's solar eclipse triggers grid backup mobilisation

Britain's grid operator issued a call for backup generation to cover the solar output gap during eclipse hours, according to Reuters. Across Europe, system operators entered the event with extensive reserve plans already activated.

The EU Commission's DG-ENER stated that Europe's electricity system remained stable despite extreme weather. No zone-level frequency incidents were cited in the available reports.

The eclipse response sits against a longer structural backdrop. Aurora Energy Research published findings showing European solar and wind capacity is on track for three-fold growth, a pace that Aurora says is already triggering urgent grid investment requirements continent-wide.
