The calm after the glut
Finnish price volatility fell 84% below its two-year norm in the week to 20 July. It was the flattest month in our data, and a pay cut for every flexible megawatt.

The Day the Market Stood Still
On Tuesday 21 July 2026, the highest hourly price in the Finnish zone was 23.23 €/MWh and the lowest was 18.72, an entire trading day contained inside four euros and fifty-one cents. By that morning, Vantage's market-watcher had flagged the Finnish zone two days running, and for the opposite of the usual reason: not a spike, not a negative-price plunge, but a disappearance. The 7-day volatility of Finnish daily prices (the statistic the detector tracks against two years of its own history) had fallen to 5.05 €/MWh against a norm of 31.27. An 83.8 percent collapse, in the bottom five percent of two years of readings, direction: calm. The reading for the week before was even lower: 3.12, ninety percent below baseline.
In a summer when every other signal in the European system was about violence (Iberian spreads at two-year records, French evenings at 220 €/MWh, a heat dome that had already produced one editorial and a Portuguese price canyon that produced another), the Finnish zone filed the strangest report of all: nothing is happening here, and nothing has never happened this hard before.
The Envelope Closes: Finnish zone daily price range, June to July 2026
€/MWhDaily minimum, mean and maximum of hourly day-ahead prices. June still swings: a 227 €/MWh spike on the 1st, near-zero weekends. Through July the three lines converge until, on 21 July, the entire day trades inside 4.51 €/MWh.
