The Merz government is preparing to reserve €8.8bn in the federal budget for a potential equity entry into TenneT's German transmission network, according to Recharge News. The allocation does not constitute a closed transaction: it creates fiscal space for a deal if terms are agreed.
TenneT's German grid covers roughly 11,600 km of high-voltage lines across northern and eastern Germany, a zone critical to integrating offshore wind from the North and Baltic Seas. The Dutch parent has been trying to divest the German arm since at least mid-2023; talks with the Dutch state over a full nationalisation collapsed, and TenneT has since explored partial sales and infrastructure fund structures.
An €8.8bn federal commitment would represent a significant public capital injection into transmission infrastructure at a time when Germany faces an estimated €600bn grid investment need through 2045, per earlier ENTSO-E and Bundesnetzagentur assessments. Final deal structure, valuation, and regulatory treatment remain open.
