Italy's largest solar plant connects as European capacity builds

A new Italian record-holder comes online via PPAs, while Plenitude's 220 MW Spanish project and a 60 MW UK CfD plant also start generation.

Three utility-scale solar plants reached operational status across Europe in the space of 24 hours. Italy's record-holding project (specific capacity not yet published) will route output to the Italian market via PPAs rather than a subsidy mechanism. In Spain, Plenitude's 220 MW Villarino plant came online on 30 June, with projected annual generation above 400 GWh. In the UK, Sonnedix's 60 MW Gonerby farm started on 29 June under the CfD scheme.

The cluster of commissioning announcements sits against a broader capacity backdrop. Research published by pv magazine on 30 June assessed solar integration potential across 38 European countries and found the continent can absorb approximately 614 GW within existing hourly demand limits, before any additional storage or flexibility is layered in. Current installed European solar capacity stands well below that ceiling, implying substantial grid-side headroom remains even without new flexibility infrastructure.

For PPA desks, the Italian project's market-route structure is the more immediately relevant data point: it signals continued developer appetite for merchant or bilateral offtake in a market where capture prices have been under pressure from midday solar saturation.
