Italy's solar capture price falls below market average in southern regions

Rising PV output is widening the gap between solar capture prices and wholesale averages across Italy's south.

Italy's solar build-out is now visibly repricing daytime power in the south. Capture prices (what solar generators actually receive, weighted by their generation profile) have fallen below the hourly market average in southern bidding zones. The driver is straightforward: more PV output is concentrated in the same midday window, compressing prices precisely when solar plants produce.

Italy's domestic PV industry is flagging 2027 as the year the squeeze accelerates, per pv magazine. The implication for project economics is direct: merchant solar in the south faces a structurally lower revenue floor unless co-located storage can shift output into higher-value hours.

Separately, Germany closed H1 2026 with 7.4 GW of new PV installed, including 1.28 GW in June, lifting cumulative capacity to 125.2 GW. The German numbers reinforce the continent-wide dynamic: sustained deployment rates are building the conditions for capture-price compression across multiple markets, not just Italy.
