Low Carbon has received planning permission for the Beacon Fen solar and storage project in Lincolnshire. The site will pair 400 MW of solar capacity with a 600 MW battery storage system, per Renews.biz.
The consent arrives as large co-located BESS projects gain momentum across GB. A 600 MW permitted battery sits well above typical standalone BESS consents approved in recent years, reflecting both falling storage costs and grid needs in the East Midlands region.
The strategic framing for projects of this scale is sharpening. Aurora Energy Research published analysis stating Spain could fully eliminate economic curtailment by 2035 if long-duration storage is deployed at sufficient scale, a dynamic directly relevant to high-solar zones across Europe. Separately, Storlytics Energy Storage analysts Jakir Hossain and Mujtaba Abdelwahab (pv magazine) argue that simulation-based dispatch modeling, rather than generic assumptions, fundamentally changes BESS sizing, LCOE outcomes, and architecture selection between AC- and DC-coupled configurations.
