National Grid launches local voltage flexibility service

National Grid launched a new local voltage flexibility service, per Energy Live News. The product sits alongside existing system-wide balancing tools and targets voltage management at a distribution-boundary level, opening a new procurement route for assets such as BESS, demand response, and distributed generation.

Separately, Renews.biz reported that the UK government approved transmission assets for the Morgan and Morecambe offshore wind projects in the Irish Sea. The infrastructure is due to come online from 2029, adding dedicated hook-up capacity for what will be a substantial block of offshore generation reaching the GB transmission system.

Taken together, the two decisions reflect pressure on National Grid to build out both the physical backbone and the ancillary-services toolkit ahead of the next wave of offshore generation. The local voltage service is particularly relevant for assets connected at distribution level seeking a monetisation route beyond wholesale arbitrage.
