Poland's grid act unlocks 150 GW connection pipeline

Poland's amended Energy Act, widely called the Grid Act, entered into force on 30 April 2026, rewriting the framework for connecting generation and storage assets to the Polish grid. Poland's Ministry of Energy estimates the reform could unlock the potential to connect around 150 GW of new renewables and storage capacity, addressing a connection queue that had become one of the sector's principal bottlenecks.

The act introduces explicit cable pooling provisions, allowing multiple assets to share a single grid connection. That flexibility has been welcomed by developers looking to co-locate solar, wind, and battery storage on constrained corridors. At the same time, the legislation tightens financial commitments: asset owners must now post greater security when a connection offer is issued and again at the implementation stage, raising the cost of holding speculative queue positions.

Energy law expert Piotr Mrowiec outlined the new rules and provisions in detail, per pv magazine. The reforms follow years of pressure on Poland's distribution and transmission operators to accelerate connection timelines, and place Poland among the EU zones that have moved to codify cable pooling in statute.
