Portugal is moving forward with a capacity market that includes a dedicated 750 MVA battery storage auction, according to pv magazine. The structure is broad: batteries, thermal generators, and flexible demand all qualify, but the ring-fenced BESS tranche is the headline figure. At 750 MVA, it would represent a material addition to the Iberian grid's dispatchable storage base.

The timing matters for the wider Iberian market. Spain and Portugal already share a bidding zone for day-ahead trading, and high solar penetration in both countries has compressed intraday prices while widening morning and evening ramps. A 750 MVA storage tranche procured under a capacity mechanism gives developers a revenue floor that merchant-only BESS projects in the zone currently lack.

No auction date or contract duration has been confirmed in the available reporting. The capacity market design is still in development, so the 750 MVA figure is a planning target, not a cleared volume.
