Seven hours of free power, one expensive evening

At 21:00 on Sunday 19 July 2026, the Portuguese zone's day-ahead auction cleared at 175.76 €/MWh. Nine hours earlier the same market had been giving electricity away: from ten in the morning until just past four in the afternoon, seven consecutive hourly prices printed at zero or within three and a half cents of it. Top to bottom, the session spanned 175.79 €/MWh (wider than all but ten days of the two years before it) on a quiet summer Sunday, between declared heat waves.

That timing is the point. It took no incident to produce this. Spain's third official heat wave of the summer would only be declared that Tuesday; the fierce early-July wave, eight to ten days of forecasts up to 44°C that had rewritten Portugal's summer demand records, had already passed; demand was mid-Sunday ordinary. What produced one of the sharpest price signals of the European summer was the ordinary machinery of a solar-heavy system doing exactly what it is built to do, twice a day, in opposite directions.
