Red Eléctrica completes €6.8 m San Isidro substation in Tenerife
The new 66 kV GIS facility in Granadilla de Abona strengthens grid meshing in southern Tenerife and adds renewable integration capacity.

Red Eléctrica, Redeia's transmission subsidiary, has commissioned the 66 kV San Isidro substation in Granadilla de Abona, closing a gap in the grid mesh across Tenerife's southern corridor. The €6.8 million project is part of Spain's current electricity planning cycle and is listed as eligible for EU NextGenerationEU funding.
The substation relies on GIS technology, which compresses the entire switchgear envelope into a single building. That design choice matters on an island where land and visual-impact constraints are acute. Four bays handle connections to the Arona and Granadilla lines plus ancillary functions. A 200-metre double-circuit 66 kV line ties the new facility into the existing Granadilla–Arona backbone.
Red Eléctrica says the substation improves security of supply for the municipality and increases the grid's capacity to absorb renewable generation in the south of the island (a relevant constraint given Tenerife's accelerating solar and wind build-out).
