Red Eléctrica is advancing construction of a battery storage system at the Sant Antoni substation in Ibiza. Once operational, the project will let the island meet 100% of its electricity demand for a significant portion of the year, up from 65% on an annual average basis today. The BESS is designed to maximise utilisation of the Mallorca–Ibiza interconnector, reducing Ibiza's dependence on local fossil generation.
The Sant Antoni project is the first battery system fully integrated into Spain's transmission grid. Paired with a second installation under way in Menorca, the combined capacity will represent what Redeia describes as the largest transmission-integrated storage system in southern Europe. No rated power or energy capacity figures were disclosed in the announcement.
The wider European BESS pipeline continued to develop on 16 June, with Renews.biz reporting separate financing and construction starts for projects in Germany (ECO STOR, NORD/LB) and the Baltic region (European Energy), and a 5 GWh compressed-air storage project in Romania announced by Airengy and Hagag Europe targeting commercial operation in early 2028.
