RTE: French grid ran on record-low carbon in H1 2024

RTE's Electricity System Review: First Semester 2024 documents the French grid's performance across January–June 2024. The headline finding is a material nuclear recovery: EDF's fleet, which suffered widespread corrosion-related outages in 2022 and into 2023, returned enough capacity in H1 2024 to shift France back to a net-exporter position on cross-border flows. On the demand side, consumption remained subdued relative to pre-2022 norms, continuing the efficiency and behavioural shift visible since the 2022 energy crisis. Renewables (wind and solar) added incremental output on top of the nuclear rebound, compressing the role of gas generation further. For traders, the net-export swing is the most actionable signal: French surplus flows into neighbouring bidding zones affect spread dynamics on the FR-DE, FR-BE, and FR-ES interconnectors.

A separate item from Renews.biz notes that the cause of a jack-up vessel incident at Esbjerg remains unclear, with Denmark's DMA citing windage as a possible factor. The investigation is ongoing and no definitive finding has been issued.
