Solar becomes EU's largest power source for first time in June

Solar output surpassed every other generation technology across the EU in June 2026, according to Energy Live News. It is the first time the technology has held that position in any single month. The result reflects both the scale of installed capacity now online and the seasonal irradiance peak across southern and central European bidding zones.

The milestone arrives as Lazard's latest levelised-cost analysis shows utility-scale solar build costs rising 18% year-on-year, a reversal of the decade-long deflationary trend. Despite that, solar retains the lowest new-build LCOE of any generation technology tracked in the report. For European asset managers with uncontracted capacity, the cost uptick matters for pipeline economics even if operational assets are unaffected.

At the northern edge of the continent, pv magazine cited energy system research projecting Finland could absorb close to 70 GW of solar PV, using the midnight-sun summer profile to offset wind's seasonal trough and undercut new nuclear on cost. Finland sits in the FI bidding zone, where solar currently contributes a negligible share of the generation mix, making the projected build-out a long-dated but structurally significant data point for Nordic capacity planning.
