Solar filled the hydro gap across Europe in summer 2026
Reservoir stocks ended the period 7.7% below their eleven-year median, but a 39 TWh solar rise since 2022 absorbed the shortfall.

Europe's hydro fleet underperformed even 2022 drought levels this summer, per pv magazine. Reservoir stocks across affected systems finished the period 7.7% below their eleven-year median. France ended the season below its historical storage floor, tightening the regional buffer heading into autumn.
The gap was covered by solar. Generation across the same systems rose 39 TWh over the four years from 2022 to 2026, enough to offset the hydro shortfall without visible stress on wholesale supply. The fleet restructuring is now measurable: reservoir hydro has pulled back from midday dispatch windows, ceding that slot to solar.
Pumped storage has reorganised around the new solar profile. Peak charging has moved from roughly 04:00 to the 13:00–14:00 window, tracking the solar generation curve. The correlation between hourly solar output and hourly pumping has risen from zero to 0.86 across six summers, a structural shift in how flexible assets are sequenced through the day.
