Solar tops 20% of EU electricity demand for three straight months

Solar exceeded 20% of EU electricity demand in May, June, and July 2026. It is the first time the threshold has held for three consecutive months. The milestone comes from data compiled by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, published 31 July. Latvia recorded the bloc's highest single-zone monthly share: 49% of demand met by solar in June.

The summer backdrop was mixed by geography. Solcast reports that July's heatwave produced above-normal irradiance across western and northern Europe, supporting generation. Southern zones faced countervailing pressure: wildfire smoke in France and Spain and Saharan dust outbreaks increased panel soiling risk, limiting the upside in the zones where curtailment and low capture prices are already a structural concern.

In the UK, cumulative installed capacity hit 22.8 GW at end-June 2026, up more than 2 GW year-on-year per pv magazine. The next policy trigger is an incoming plug-in solar regulatory framework, which the industry expects to open a new demand segment.
