Spain braces for 5 GW solar drop during 12 August eclipse
Red Eléctrica estimates peak PV output will fall ~5 GW, around 13% of typical August Wednesday demand, but system adequacy is not at risk.

Red Eléctrica published its impact assessment on 7 August, drawing on a proprietary obscuration-curve model built specifically for eclipse events. The operator estimates the peak shortfall at approximately 5 GW of solar PV across the Spanish zone. That figure represents about 13% of demand on a typical August Wednesday, a material but manageable swing given the depth of Spain's current flexible and thermal backup.
Critically, the eclipse falls during a window when PV generation is already declining from its midday peak. The net effect is an earlier and slightly steeper ramp-down rather than a hole cut out of peak generation. Red Eléctrica states demand coverage is not expected to be compromised. The Balearic and Canary Islands zones will see no significant impact.
Weather remains the key uncertainty: heavy cloud cover before the eclipse could dampen baseline PV output and mask the event's signal, while clear skies would produce the sharpest 5 GW step. Reuters also reported that EU grid operators more broadly are coordinating contingency measures ahead of the event.
