Spain extends Almaraz nuclear plant life through 2030

Spain has granted an extended operating licence to the Almaraz nuclear plant, keeping it online through 2030, according to Reuters. The move is a direct reversal of the phase-out schedule embedded in Spain's prior energy legislation, which had slated Almaraz for closure before that date.

Almaraz is the Spanish zone's largest nuclear facility. Retaining it preserves a block of firm, dispatchable, low-carbon capacity that the zone would otherwise have had to replace or absorb through interconnectors and storage. The extension lands as the Spanish zone logs an increasing number of near-zero and negative price hours driven by solar saturation.
