Spain's high-voltage interconnection with France via the Bay of Vizcaya is 70% complete, per a Redeia press release. The project will add a direct current submarine and underground link between the two zones, with the Gatika converter station in Vizcaya converting DC to AC for integration into the Spanish transmission grid.

At Gatika, civil construction is finished and electromechanical assembly is in progress. The onshore section is proceeding on schedule. The full onshore route is routed underground, following existing tracks and paths to limit land-use impact.

Spain's Secretary of State for Energy Joan Groizard joined Redeia CEO Roberto García Merino, Basque Industry Minister Mikel Jauregi, and Government Delegate Mª Soledad Garmendia for the inspection. The interconnection is a strategic asset for reducing the Iberian Peninsula's historic isolation from the broader European grid.
