Spain-Portugal 400 kV northern link opens, adding 1,000 MW capacity
The Pontevedra–Viana do Castelo interconnection raises cross-border transfer capacity to 4,200 MW westbound and 3,500 MW eastbound.

Spain and Portugal have inaugurated the 400 kV northern electricity interconnection between Pontevedra and Viana do Castelo, increasing bilateral exchange capacity by approximately 1,000 MW. Total transfer capacity now reaches 4,200 MW in the Spain-to-Portugal direction and 3,500 MW in the reverse direction, per Red Eléctrica.
The link is included in Spain's current Electricity Transmission Grid Plan and carries EU Project of Common Interest designation. Red Eléctrica built the Spanish section; Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN) built the Portuguese side. The additional capacity supports MIBEL integration and is designed to ease congestion between the two zones during high-renewable output periods.
Red Eléctrica states the infrastructure will allow 281 GWh of additional renewable energy to be absorbed annually, equivalent to a CO2 reduction of 113,000 tonnes per year. Separately, Red Eléctrica also completed the new 220 kV Calatorao substation in Zaragoza this week, a €8.8 million project that adds a 1.5 km double-circuit connection to the Jalón–Los Vientos line to support industrial load in the region.
