Spain's August electricity demand rises 2.4% on adjusted basis

Spain's grid operator Red Eléctrica reported that gross electricity demand in the Spanish zone hit 23,137 GWh in August 2026, a 3.7% rise versus August 2025. After adjusting for working patterns and temperatures, the increase narrows to 2.4%, pointing to underlying demand growth rather than a calendar or weather effect.

Renewables delivered 13,640 GWh across the month, up 11% year-on-year, and claimed a 53.6% share of the total generation mix. Solar PV led all technologies for the fifth month running. Self-consumption installations added an estimated 1,600 GWh on top of grid-connected output, a figure Red Eléctrica flags as based on available data rather than final metering.

Year-to-date through August, cumulative demand in the Spanish zone stands at 175,858 GWh. The adjusted growth rate of 1.7% for the eight-month period is notably below the gross figure of 2.8%, underscoring the role of warmer-than-normal conditions in lifting raw consumption numbers.
