Terna and Greece's IPTO signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 12 May 2025 to jointly develop GRITA 2, a new electrical interconnection between Italy and Greece. The agreement commits both transmission system operators to a shared development roadmap for the project, though no investment figure or in-service date has been disclosed at this stage.
The existing GRITA cable already links the two grids; a second corridor would raise cross-zonal transfer capacity on the Italy South–Greece interface, a route that regularly faces binding constraints during high renewable output periods. Expanded capacity on this corridor supports both Italian re-dispatch reduction and Greek export headroom into the broader European network.
For Terna, GRITA 2 sits alongside active interconnection work on the Italy–France border and the earlier Colunga–Calenzano domestic reinforcement. The MOU signals that Mediterranean cross-border buildout remains a strategic priority for the Italian TSO alongside its domestic grid investment programme.
