Cable laying for the Tyrrhenian Link began in Sicily as of 7 February 2025, according to Terna. The project is one of Italy's largest grid investments: a multi-gigawatt HVDC link designed to relieve chronic north–south congestion and integrate renewable capacity from the islands. No commissioning date was specified in the announcement.
The Tyrrhenian Link milestone sits alongside broader Italian grid momentum. Terna reported more than €2.3 billion in authorised works across 2024. The operator also signed an agreement with Rome utility Acea to acquire part of the high-voltage transmission network in the Rome metropolitan area, consolidating TSO ownership of urban grid assets.
On HVDC costs more broadly, a KPMG analysis commissioned for Elia's Princess Elisabeth Energy Island (published 18 February 2025) found that HVDC equipment and installation prices are at unprecedented market levels. KPMG concluded that Elia's technical choices are in line with market norms, a finding relevant for any European TSO currently procuring HVDC capacity.
