Terna breaks ground on Veneto–Emilia Romagna underground cable link

Terna has begun work on a new underground cable power line between the Veneto and Emilia Romagna zones, the TSO announced. No capacity figure was published in the announcement, but the corridor sits on one of Italy's most persistently congested internal boundaries, where north-south flows regularly separate zonal day-ahead prices.

Underground cabling at transmission voltage avoids the permitting delays that have stalled overhead projects across Italy in recent years. Terna has been expanding its underground programme as part of its multi-year grid development plan, with the Veneto to Emilia Romagna link representing a further step in reinforcing the northern grid.

Separately, Natural Power has been awarded an investigation contract for the EGL5 route, a proposed 2 GW HVDC submarine cable, per Renews.biz. The two projects are unrelated but both reflect continued investment pressure on European transmission infrastructure heading into the second half of the decade.
