Spanish researchers have developed a three-phase framework that uses unmanned aerial vehicles to inspect utility-scale PV plants. The system maps the plant, identifies defective modules, and assesses fault severity in successive stages.

In tests at two utility-scale sites in England, module-detection accuracy reached up to 98.55%. Fault-classification accuracy came in at 96.6%. Both figures come from pv magazine's 5 August 2026 report on the research.

The result matters for O&M economics. Automated UAV inspection at that accuracy level can replace or supplement manual thermal surveys, reducing the labour cost of fault detection on large plants. No deployment timeline or commercial availability was stated in the source.
