Cornwall Insight forecasts the GB energy price cap will reach its highest point in three years when the October quarterly reset takes effect, per Reuters reporting. The consultancy did not publish a specific £/MWh or £/year figure in the Reuters piece, but the directional signal is unambiguous: wholesale cost pass-through is moving the cap materially higher into the winter period.
The October cap level is a direct function of the Ofgem methodology, which tracks a rolling average of wholesale gas and power prices. Analysts should note the read-across to retailer margin pressure and potential demand suppression heading into the heating season.
No equivalent price-cap mechanism exists in the Baltic or Nordic zones, so the GB signal does not translate directly to Continental European bidding zones. It does, however, reinforce the broader picture of elevated European energy costs as winter approaches.
