The 900 MW Waltrop battery energy storage project in Germany has entered the construction phase, per Renews.biz. No commissioning date was disclosed, but the implementation milestone marks the transition from development to active build: the point at which procurement, civil works, and grid connection agreements are typically locked.

At 900 MW, Waltrop is a material addition to German grid-scale storage capacity. Germany's transmission operators have flagged growing reliance on fast-response storage for balancing as thermal dispatch shrinks, making large BESS projects in the country increasingly relevant to aFRR and FCR market depth.

Separately, European Energy closed a hybrid financing with Deutsche Bank covering solar refinancing and battery construction in Australia. The two items together reflect a single session in which large-format BESS projects advanced on two continents. Both were sourced from Renews.biz on 20 July 2026.
